The Hiscox company has reached this conclusion in the results of its study carried out in the USA and which has just been made public. Only 35% of the responses acknowledged that they are actively using social media, 16% stated that they were interested in its use, and 7% commented that they did not have time to implement them. But although this is the current picture of the sector, Facebook says that there has been a rapid growth in its implementation.

According to TechCrunch Vanuatu Email List Dan Levy, head of SMEs within Facebook, estimates that there are now almost 13 million local business pages, a jump of more than 40% since last January. And what is more, the number of pages on Facebook of local companies that have inserted advertising, has more than doubled in this period. Still medium and small companies have many doubts about the benefits of social media. A recent Act-On Software study, conducted by Forrester Consulting, found that the widespread perception within SMBs is that social media has yet to prove its worth. The Hiscox study shares the same concern. 14% do not know if social media is useful when promoting their business, and an additional 19% do not believe it is. And 1 in 10 do not understand social media enough to give an opinion.

The study also draws other important conclusions, such as that small business owners are clear about what works best for them. 79% say that word of mouth is the most effective for their business, and 44% say the same about advertising. Some small businesses are more apt than others to use social media. For example, 42% of IT stores take advantage of it, as do 31% of business services companies and 18% of car dealerships.
