While only one in ten used them last year, 39% indicated that they did use social media in September 2010, with the aim of increasing sales through direct connection with consumers. Facebook is the most used tool, 27%, while 9% have used LinkedIn, 8% Twitter and 5% have their own blog.
The American Express report shows that 39% of respondents consider that having implemented social marketing has increased the visibility of their business compared to 17% who believe that it had not generated business for them. In September, ITZ Belden and the American Press Institute (API) conducted a survey of SMEs that advertise in local newspapers and found that 40% of respondents used social media. Only 20% considered that they were an important source for their business compared to 77% who cited customer recommendations and 65% who selected the advice of friends and family.
